The F.A. Community Shield

Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

Liverpool  2 – 1  Chelsea

It was an early start for six of the U15’s Angels team as they set off from Matlock at 7am on Sunday 13th August 2006 to be ball girls at the traditional football season opener – The F.A. Community Shield. Five and a half hours later the coach arrived at Cardiff just in time for the girls to have a pre-match meal courtesy of the F.A. The girls were given a match kit and tracksuit, and then taken into the stadium for a briefing and preparation for the game ahead.

Louise, Vicky and Joanne were selected to help carry the flag out before the match and stand on the pitch as the players were being introduced to the crowd.

During the match the girls were actively involved, and had a close up view of the skill on display. Rhiann was right behind the goal where John Arne Riise unleashed a fierce 25yd shot after running the length of the pitch to score a sensational goal.

At the other end Emily and Amy were close at hand to see Andriy Schevchenko score his first goal in English football and Peter Crouch score the winner for Liverpool with ten minutes to go.

Representatives from Derbyshire F.A. looked after the girls all day and ensured they had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The girls gave special thanks to Keely Brown the Derbyshire County F.A’s Girls and Women’s Development Officer who put the players up for selection for this great experience.

What the girls said about the day

Just being part of such a big occasion was special, a great memory to look
back on. Being a Liverpool supporter made it that bit better, specially being
in front of the Liverpool fans all game, with them singing their heart out for
the team they love, definitely the best supporters in the world! The stadium
looked small from outside, but then inside, it told a different story, it was
massive! Although the stadium wasn't packed, obviously the Liverpool stands
were, with supporters travelling from all over the world to support their
beloved Liverpool, just a shame the Chelsea fans couldn't afford the tickets
to fill their ends up, ha-ha!! Great day though, pass on my thanks to Keely
for putting our names forward to represent Derbyshire in such a big event.

As soon as we arrived the atmosphere around the ground was breath-taking. The fans were wild. Walking down the tunnel before the players was amazing. Looking back and seeing John Terry and Jamie Carragher following us out of the tunnel was brilliant. The atmosphere during the match was overwhelming. After the match during the presentation it was incredible to be so close to Jose Mourinho and the Chelsea squad.

I liked the Chelsea fans and Liverpool fans giving there support to the teams and getting to throw the ball back to Cudicini!!! It was fantastic to walk out upon the pitch and see the blues training and especially getting to see Frank Lampard with no top on after the game. I liked all the support and to hear the fans voices echo around the stadium.
